The Nightly News
London, England | East Lansing, Michigan
The Nightly News is a participatory video installation featuring thousands of visitors’ handwritten descriptions of their nightly dreams. Initially created at the American School in London and expanded at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, the installation invited visitors to submit dreams and watch an ever-growing video of select responses. In the video, torn responses are presented in reverse, speaking to the sensation of recalling a dream: piecing together surreal scenes to find meaning beyond the realm of logic.
Themes emerged: we fall, we flee, and we search for answers. We can’t get away, our teeth fall out, and we are strangers in a strange land. Devoted to intensely private yet universally recognizable symbols, the installation reveals our profound commonalities in stories bound by anxiety and desire. Created in collaboration with James A. Reeves.
