The Hair District is Candy's photography book on hair salons in Johannesburg. While she was there for Global Studio she was struck by the number of hair salons in Diepsloot township. She documented these storefronts and took portraits of local residents and their fresh hairstyles. Combining these photos with striking facts on the economic imbalances in South Africa, the book serves as an engaging way to introduce people to the planning challenges in Johannesburg. She is currently collaborating with the local non-profit Diepsloot Community News to further develop the project. Official publication pending. Proceeds will go to Diepsloot Community News.
