The Hair District: A Portrait of Hair Salons in a Johannesburg Township is a 102-page photography book on hair salons and residents in Diepsloot township in Johannesburg. While Candy was there for Global Studio she documented these popular and universal storefronts that serve as community meeting places and opportunities for self-employment. She also took portraits of local residents and their fresh hairstyles. Combining these images with striking facts on the economic imbalances in South Africa, the book serves as an introduction to some of the planning challenges in the area. She's currently collaborating with the local non-profit Diepsloot Community News to further develop the project with interviews, articles, and photographs by local residents. Official publication pending. Proceeds will go to Diepsloot Community News.
