Report

During June an July of 2006, Candy partcipated in Global Studio, a program where international interdisciplinary students, academics, and professionals come together to collaborate on community-based projects.

Candy, along with 13 fellow architecture and urban planning students and faculty, worked closely with the organization VANDU, the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users. Many residents and recovering drug addicts of the Downtown Eastside neighborhood rely on crucial community services on a regular basis, and many women shared concerns about their safety in the male-dominant neighborhood.

To help ensure that these resources were accessible, Candy worked with local organizations and female residents to develop a pamphlet of local resources recommended by women in the area. Because many residents have limited internet access, a printed pamphlet was an important format. The brochure includes a map of organizations, a key of services, a blank calendar, and a list of phone numbers for crisis, legal, and recovery help. Intended for local organizations to maintain, the pamphlet is printed on standard 8.5 x 11" paper. And, suggested by VANDU members, the pamphlet folds down to wallet-size for easy portability. She also created a public intervention in a street parking space.
